Mr. Alvie Ernest VanDyke, age 88, of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Monday (January 9, 2023) at his home. Born September 30, 1934 in Skeggs section of Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Fernando and Patty Jane Horn VanDyke. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a retired coal miner and owner/operator of Alvie VanDyke Trucking. He was a member of Pine Creek Holiness Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family at his cabin in Wytheville, Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rita Kay VanDyke; nine brothers, Bill, Buck, F.P., Hurley, C.B., Doc, George, Charlie, and Benny VanDyke; and six sisters, Esther Mitchell, Hassie Jackson, Naomi Deel, Rosalie Matney, Julie Galloway, and Vergie Shehey. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-nine years, Sylvia VanDyke; one son, Mike VanDyke and wife, Barbara; one daughter, Cindy Hess and husband, Terry; grandchildren, Matt VanDyke and wife, Amber, Kristen Miller and husband, Ryan, Josh VanDyke and wife, Rachel, and Savannah Hess; great-grandchildren, Abby Miller, Rhett VanDyke, and Oakley Jane Miller; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 PM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Richardson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 to go in procession.
Pallbearers will be Josh VanDyke, Matt VanDyke, Jack VanDyke, Jimmy VanDyke, Rick Miller and Guy Fletcher.
Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Clark, Jerry Clark, Jerry VanDyke, Charlie VanDyke, Wayne Cordle, Mark McGlothlin, Danny McGlothlin, Henry Stilwell, Herman McGlothlin, Ferrell McGlothlin, Danny VanDyke, Ernie VanDyke, and Mack VanDyke.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home from 5:30 – 7:00 PM Wednesday.
