Obituary for Berry Holland Hess

Rev. Berry Holland Hess, age 94, of Honaker, Virginia, formerly of Swords Creek, passed away Thursday (April 7, 2022) at the home of his daughter. Born October 31, 1927 in Russell County, Virginia, he was a son of the late William “Bud” and Alafair Street Hess. A lifelong resident of the area, he had worked many years in the coal mines to provide for his family. He was a member at Perkins Chapel and loved attending church, preaching, and serving God. A dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He wanted to go Home to be with his wife, but most of all he wanted to see Jesus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-one years, Rev. Ettie Connie Ray Hess, two sons, Ronnie Hess and Roger Hess, one daughter, Nancy Dye, two grandchildren, Audrey Rife and Gary Wayne Dye, two sons-in-law, Rev. Larry Dye and Rev. Chester Dye, and several brothers and sisters. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his daughter and caregiver, Mary Dye of Honaker; one son, Donnie Hess and wife, Cathy of Cedar Bluff; two daughters-in-law, Sue Hess Meadows and husband, Jerry, and Denise Hess; grandchildren, Teresa “Sis” Dye, whom also was a caregiver, Cindy Ball and husband, Chadrick, Doug Dye and wife, Teresa, Tina Dye, Tonia Royal, and Kelli Hess; great-grandchildren, Sierra Rickman and husband, Jim, Tiffany Roberts and husband, Kevin, Brittany Dye, Christian Ball, Charity Ball, Chasity Ball, Amber Dye, Lauren Farmer and husband, A.J., Madison Royal and honorary, Rosemary Robinson; great-great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Sluss, Cannan Farmer, and Jymma Rickman; special friend, Mason Whited; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Divine Home Care for the love and care they provided.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Daniel Richardson, Rev. Steve Ray, and Bro. Chadrick Ball officiating. Interment will follow in the Hess Cemetery at Miller Creek.
Pallbearers will be Chadrick Ball, Christian Ball, Doug Dye, Jim Rickman, Bernie Dye, Tyler Perkins, Josh Waldron, Jerry Meadows, A.J. Farmer, and Timmy Hess.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mason Whited, J.J. Price, William Harrison, Billy Dye, Don Wampler, and Chester Ball.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Saturday where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Junior Ray and Bro. Chadrick Ball officiating.
