Obituary for Billy Ed Sample
Mr. Billy Ed Sample, age 88, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Saturday (September 3, 2022) at his home. Born September 16, 1933 in Honaker, Virginia, he was a son of the late Sam and Eula Smith Sample. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1951 graduate of Honaker High School and went on to further his education at Virginia Tech earning a Bachelors’ Degree in 1955 and a Masters’ Degree in 1964. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Honaker, the Honaker Lions’ Club, and had served on the Russell County School Board. He had retired from the Russell County School System serving as principal at Drill, Swords Creek Elementary, Honaker Elementary, and Honaker High School. He enjoyed farming and watching his favorite teams, the Honaker Tigers and Virginia Tech Hokies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Sample, one granddaughter, Jacquelyn Sample, daughter-in-law, Nancy Sample, and one sister, Betty Sample.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie Sample of Wytheville, Barry Sample and wife, Juanita of Abingdon, and Joel Sample of Rosedale; five grandchildren, Kelly Sample of Wytheville, Nathan Sample and wife, Francesca of Roanoke, Neil Sample and wife, Misty of Abingdon, Caleb Sample and wife, Hannah of Lebanon, and Brandon Sample and wife, Jodi-Lee of Glade Springs; four great-grandchildren, Halle Elizabeth Roe-Sample, Ashton Crigger, Claire Sample, and Oliver Sample also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Wade Taylor and Rev. Caleb Sample officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon, Virginia. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30 AM to go in procession.
Pallbearers will be Gary Musick, C.B. Yates, Jimmy Taylor, Brandon Sample, Neil Sample, Nathan Sample, and Ashton Crigger.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rosedale Baptist Church GoTeam, 352 Oakvale Avenue, Rosedale, Virginia 24280.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 5:30 PM Monday.
