Obituary for Carl Ray

Mr. Carl Ray, age 88, of the Hurricane Creek section of Davenport, Virginia passed away Monday (May 29, 2023) at Commonwealth Senior Living in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. Born February 15, 1935, he was the son of the late Doll and Bessie Hess Ray. He was a 1953 graduate of Council High School and had served his country in the United States Army. A retired coal miner, had been employed for many years as an electrician for Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed gardening, auto mechanics and attending bluegrass festivals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife, Yvonne Breeding Ray and several brothers and sisters. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include three children, Jeff Ray of Davenport, Virginia, Pamela Evans and husband, Clinton of Pounding Mill, Virginia and Jennifer Elkins and husband, David of Atlanta, Georgia; twin grandsons, Gavin and Sam Elkins; brother at heart, Ron Adkins and wife, Becky; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special, heartfelt thank you to the staff and caregivers of Commonwealth Senior Living and to the staff of Legacy Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Matthew Vance officiating. UMWA Honors will be conducted by Sub-28 Chaplain Corp. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Gavin Elkins, Sam Elkins, Dave Elkins, Ashton Nagler, Lawrence Nagler, Clinton Evans and Ron Adkins.
The family will receive friends at Honaker Funeral Home after 6 PM Thursday.
