Obituary for Daniel Roosevelt Johnson
Daniel Roosevelt Johnson, a few days shy of 86 of Honaker, VA passed from this life on Earth on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at home surrounded by his wife and children. Born November 8, 1936 in Council, VA he was a son of the late Elias Ishmael Johnson and Canzada Stevens Johnson.
He was a self-made businessman and with a strong work ethic and a knack in sales who accomplished so much with a simple fourth grade education. He founded and managed a successful roofing and guttering business along with King and Queen Carpet store that often doubled as a Christmas tree lot, used car lot or lot for whatever was in season or demand. He owned and managed many rental properties. He also had a heart for the less fortunate and people that many would look over. Often giving them room and board and taking them under his wing. He married the love of his life, Marie Honaker Johnson when they were just 16 and they shared (almost) 70 years together, 8 children, 11 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling with his family and one of his greatest adventures was a trip to Hawaii where we all learned he preferred fried fish like Long John Silvers to fine dining. He also loved traveling in his RV packed with as many family members as possible and was happy as long as they were moving and didn’t stop too long. In later years, he had made his profession of faith in Jesus and had become a Christian.
He was proceeded in death by one infant son, Danny Richard; nine brothers Hubbard Johnson, Attley Johnson, Lonnie Johnson, Aubrey Johnson, Herman Johnson, Rufus Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Ellis Johnson, and Kermit Johnson; and one sister Lethia Johnson Hale; and two loving son-in-laws, Larry Murphy and Kenny King. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Honaker Johnson; children Harold Johnson and wife Donna, Trish Johnson King, Kathy Johnson Ray and husband Mike, Judy Johnson Murphy, Darryl Johnson, David Johnson and partner Mark Phillips, Chris Johnson and wife Tamera ; grandchildren Chad King and wife Kelli, Lindsey Ray Lawson and husband Bryan, Clinton Johnson and wife Chrystal, Myra Murphy Childress and husband Ben, Chase King and wife Jessica, Courtney King Jessee and husband Ben, Megan Murphy, Hunter Johnson, Hayden Johnson, Peyton Johnson and Ethan Johnson; step grandchildren Richard Shelton and wife Michelle, Joseph Shelton and wife Ashley; great grandchildren Gage, Griffin, Barrett and Callan King, Romy Kate and Stella Rose Lawson, Clint and Brianna Johnson, Murphy Jo and Millie Jane Childress, Landry and Alden Jessee, and Sophie Johnson; 7 step great grandchildren; and 9 step great great Grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 2nd at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker, VA. The family will receive friends after 6:00PM. Graveside services and entombment will be conducted on Thursday November 3rd 11:00 AM at Green Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 10:30AM to go in procession.
