Obituary for Daniel Kyle "Monk" Hess

Mr. Daniel Kyle “Monk” Hess, age 87, of the Call Valley section of Swords Creek, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (February 3, 2021). Born February 3, 1934 in Council, Virginia, he was a son of the late Otis and Ida Stevens Hess. A lifelong resident of the area, he attended Miller Creek Community Church. He loved to read his Bible, sharing the Word of God with others, and singing His praises. He was a disabled coal miner with forty years of service, having been employed with Clinchfield Coal Company, and was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed fishing and squirrel hunting, but most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-eight years, Maedean Hess; two sons, Kyle Hess, Jr. and Garry Hess; one son-in-law, Wayne Ratliff; sisters, Jettie Dye, Renia Perkins, Venia Hubbard, and Ruth Hubbard; and brothers, Albert Hess, Carl Hess, Jack Hess, Clarence Hess, and Dingus Hess.
Survivors include one son, Darrell Hess and wife, Vickie of Blackford; three daughters, Diana Richardson and husband, Avery “Sandy” of Richlands, and Lisha Hart (Monk’s special caregiver)and husband, Mike, Jennifer Ratliff and fiancé, Keith Stevens all of Honaker; two sisters, Mavis Hubbard and Goldie Dye; twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Legacy Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Steve Damron and Rev. Leo Hess officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon, Virginia.
Due to COVID restrictions mandated by the governor, a mask is required. For those unable or uncomfortable attending, the funeral service will be livestreamed on our Facebook page as well as our webpage.
Pallbearers will be Jason Hess, Ryan Richardson, Channing Hart, Zachary Hart, Justin Hess, and Cody Compton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Derek Hart, Dustin Ratliff, and Evan Ratliff.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home on Friday from 12:00 PM until the funeral hour.
