Obituary for George Washington Helton
Mr. George Washington Helton, age 85, of the Stinson Ridge section of Rowe, Virginia, passed away Saturday morning (February 18, 2023) at his home. Born February 22, 1937 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Elijah Everett and Beulah Hess Helton. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a retired coal miner and a member of the Fletcher’s Ridge Freewill Baptist Church. He was always showing God’s love to others and enjoyed sitting on the porch, waving at others as they passed by. His favorite saying was “Suits the fire out of me!” He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend, who will be missed by all that knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora C. Miller Helton; four children, Wanda Helton, Betty Helton, Ronnie Helton and Daniel Helton; brothers, Dewey Helton, Earnest Helton, Arnold Helton and sisters, Rosie Helton, Oakley Helton and Gladys Rose.
Survivors include six children, Ollie Helton of Little Prater, Virginia, Geneva Justus and husband, Jim of Rowe, Virginia, Joyce Young of Dismal, Virginia, Roberta Young and husband, Mike of Hurley, Virginia, Harvey Helton and wife, Tammy of Fletcher’s Ridge, Virginia and Jeffrey Helton and wife, Angela of Bee, Virginia; four sisters, Ruby Miller and husband, Edward and Mary Jane Compton both of Honaker, Virginia, Dorothy Dye of Swords Creek, Virginia and Hazel Daw of Ohio; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
George’s desire for his birthday this year was for his entire family to gather for a church service. Therefore, in honoring his final wish the funeral service will be conducted on his birthday, Wednesday (February 22, 2023) at 1 PM in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Tommy Dye officiating. Interment will follow in the Helton Cemetery on Stinson Ridge.
Pallbearers will be Marshall Nuckles, Brandon Helton, Dustin Helton, Logan Young, Tyler Young, Timmy Billiter, Brandon Woods, William Ball and Matthew Gilbert.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tonya Billiter, Sonya Woods, Samantha Ball, Kayla Helton, Shannon Nuckles, Anissia Helton, Savannah Helton and Brittney Adkins.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Monday and Tuesday evenings at Honaker Funeral Home where an evening service will be conducted at 7 PM both evenings.
