Obituary for Glen Phipps

Mr. Glen Phipps, age 84, of the Bearwallow section of Jewell Ridge, Virginia, passed away Monday (May 16, 2022) at his home. Born November 12, 1937 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late George Preston and Amelia Elizabeth Sparks Phipps. A lifelong resident of Bearwallow Mountain, he was a member of Calvary Light House. He had worked a Pittston Coal Company for thirteen years and was a member of the UMWA. A New York Yankees fan, he enjoyed farming, hunting, trout fishing, and watching westerns.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nellie Frances Phipps; one daughter, Shelia Syphers, one son, Kevin Lee “Scoobie” Phipps; grandson, Jamie Preston Phipps; one sister, Ruth Webster, one brother, Gerald Phipps, and one uncle, Curtis Sparks.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-three years, Jennifer Sims Phipps of the home; two sons, James Preston Phipps of Jewell Ridge and Richard Allen Phipps and wife, Leda of Richlands; two daughters, Glenna Ruth Phipps and Sharon McGlothlin both of Richlands; one sister, Lois Evans; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter, Naomi; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Thursday at Calvary Lighthouse, 417 S. Railroad Avenue, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Mike Ryan officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday in the Phipps Family Cemetery on Jewell Ridge. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Danny Godbey, David Godbey, Rafty Dye, Daniel Reynolds, Mike Ryan, and Ed Cornett.
The family will receive friends at the Calvary Lighthouse in Honaker, Virginia after 6:00 PM Thursday.
