Obituary for Harold "H.L." Lloyd Dye

Mr. Harold Lloyd (H.L.) Dye, age 94, of Honaker, Virginia went to be with this Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Born November 2, 1927, in Swords Creek, Virginia, he was the only child of the late Elbert (E.P.) and Eunice Vance Dye. H.L. graduated from Honaker High School in 1946, where he played football and basketball. He went to work in the coal mines after high school and was drafted into the United States Army in 1950 serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. When he came home, he attended Emory and Henry College before returning to work in the mines. H.L. was a member of the UMWA.
H.L. went to work as a rural mail carrier on Route 1 in Honaker, Virginia in 1960 and served in that capacity for twenty-eight years. He was a member of the N.R.L. C.A. H.L. was one of the oldest members of the Pruner Masonic Lodge at Blackford, Virginia and a member of the Honaker United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong Democrat.
One of the accomplishments of which H.L. was most proud was working with a handful of other men to build the Honaker baseball fields and recreation area. He was a faithful fan and strong supporter of the Honaker Tigers. Because of his years of volunteer work, an annual award was named in his honor, The H.L. Dye Award is given each year to a volunteer who best exemplifies an untiring dedication and loyalty to the H.H.S. Football Program.
Survivors include his wife of seventy-two years, Corine Whited Dye; one son, John Dye (Rebecca Taylor Dye); one daughter, Dana Dye (Allston Vander Horst); five grandchildren, Stephen Vander Horst (Terri), Whitney Hutchens (Andy), John Taylor Vander Horst, Julia Dunn (Josh), and Andrew Dye; eight great-grandchildren, Owen, Savannah, Max, and Sophie Vander Horst, Madeline and Kellen Hutchens, and Maggie and Maisie Dunn.
In lieu of flowers, send memorial contributions to the Honaker United Methodist Church. Your prayers for H.L.’s family are deeply appreciated.
There will be a private family service with a celebration of life to be scheduled in the spring.
