Obituary for Herman Elkanah Compton

Mr. Herman Elkanah Compton, age 92, of Council, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home into the arms of his Lord on Thursday (January 20, 2022). Born April 30, 1929 in Cinderella, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Elkanah and Cora Taylor Compton. A graduate of Council High School, he had served in the United States Army from 1950-1952. He had formerly been employed by Lebanon Block and Supply, retiring after fifty-five years of dedicated service. A member of Corinth Baptist Church, he had served over the years as Sunday School Superintendent, song leader, and deacon. Herman was hard-working and dedicated to his family and his faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert Compton, Edward Compton, and Eugene Compton, two sisters, Betty Hale and Margaret Fletcher, and son-in-law, Joe Street. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his loving and dedicated wife of sixty-eight years, Irene Fletcher Compton; two daughters, Jane Street of Newport News, Virginia and Rebecca Ferrell and husband, Michael of Abingdon; four grandchildren, Joseph Street and wife, Noel, Cora Hite and husband, Charles, Sarah Souter and husband, Tom, and Spencer Ferrell and girlfriend, Meghin; five great-grandchildren, J.C. Street, Laina Street, Lucy Hite, Owen Souter, and Reid Souter; several nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to MSA Hospice Care, especially his special caregivers, Betsy, Linda, and Paula, and Chaplain, Tim, and the VA Home Based Care Team and caregivers, Linda and Lora for their special help and care in his final months.
Private services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Stephen Musick officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Street, Spencer Ferrell, Jerry Fletcher, John Hale, Lloyd Hale, and Scott Compton.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
