Mr. Lonnie Melvin Whitt, age 73, of the Lynn Springs section of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (February 17, 2021) in an Abingdon, Virginia hospital. Born June 21, 1947 in Russell County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Arthur Edward and Bessie Mae Defrice Whitt. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith. He had been employed as a coal miner for thirty-one years, and had retired from the East Star Mine. In his spare time, he enjoyed fox hunting, watching sports and westerns and sitting on his front porch whittling.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James William Whitt.
Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years, Kathy Whitt of the home; two sons, Arthur Edward Whitt of the home and James Howard Cox of Lenoir, North Carolina; one daughter, Rhonda Horn and husband, James of Honaker, Virginia; nine grandchildren, Miranda “Sissy”, Marie, Katie, Jessica, Gary, Travis, Johnny, Christopher and Raylan; five great-grandchildren, Dakota, Tommy, Sawyer, Bella and Haven; three sisters, Elizabeth Rummley and husband, Raymond of Rosedale, Virginia, Bertha Kiser of Honaker, Virginia and Bonnie Ray and husband, Darrell of Lebanon, Virginia; one special brother-in-law, Foxy Reynolds; special nephews, Danny and Jerry Reynolds; special friends, Jerry and Gerelene Pruitt and Andrea Proffitt and several very special nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of CCU at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia and Dr. Vickie Stevens.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitt Cemetery near the home.
Due to COVID restrictions mandated by the governor, a mask is required. For those unable or uncomfortable attending, the funeral service will be livestreamed on our Facebook page as well as our webpage.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Horn, Gary Hubbard, Jr., David Honaker, Rob Ray, Preston Ball, Shawn Johnson, Travis Hubbard and Johnny Horn.
The family will receive friends after 6 PM Friday at Honaker Funeral Home where an evening service will be conducted at 7 PM.
