Obituary

Maedean “Mamaw” Hess, age 85, of the Call Valley section of Swords Creek, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (September 23, 2020) in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital. Born November 20, 1934 in Miller Creek, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Hallie Earl and Minnie Ellen Miller Hubbard. A lifelong resident of the area, she had formerly been employed as a seamstress at Honaker Mills and had worked with her son at his store, Garry’s Deli. Maedean went above and beyond as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and always talked to her children every day. She was a devoted Christian and attended Miller Creek Community Church. She loved to worship the Lord and promote the Gospel by singing in church. She touched many lives with her singing and was always there to listen, give wise advice or pray when needed. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting working in her yard and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Kyle Hess, Jr. and Garry Hess; one son-in-law, Wayne Ratliff; brothers, Yulas, Tivis, Jerry and Ronnie Fearl Hubbard and sisters, Vertella Clark and Marie “Bunny” Richardson.
Survivors include her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Kyle “Monk” Hess; one son, Darrell Hess and wife, Vickie of Blackford, Virginia; three daughters, Diana Richardson and husband, Avery “Sandy” of Richlands, Virginia, Lisha Hart and husband, Mike and Jennifer Ratliff both of Honaker, Virginia; two brothers, Toby Hubbard and Kirby Hubbard and sister, Charlotte Glenda Hubbard; twelve grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Damron officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Jason Hess, Ryan Richardson, Channing Hart, Zachary Hart, Justin Hess and Cody Compton.
Honorary pallbearers will be Derek Hart, Dustin Ratliff and Evan Ratliff.
The family will receive friends at Honaker Funeral Home from 1 PM until the funeral hour.
Online condolences may be made at www.honakerfuneralhome.net.

Aunt Maedean loved and trusted the Lord and loved to have deep conversations about His word. I have countless memories of our banter and her enlightening me of the meaning of scriptures that I did not fully understand. She even told me that she had read many things in the Bible many times, without understanding, until God reveled to her, in His timing, what it meant. We talked often about salvation and our hearts concerns as mothers and grandmothers. Occasionally, she would sing a song that spoke to a subject at hand. She eventually stopped singing because she thought her voice was no longer worthy. At a Hubbard Brother’s reunion, a few years back, I begged her to sing with the boys. Eventually, she stood up and just started to sing. She was so humble and Ernest as she lifted her voice in praise. I felt so blessed and honored to witness that moment. I know that, as of 1 am on September 23rd, 2020, my precious Aunt is in full voice in the presence of God singing with her momma and daddy, my momma, her sons, and her brothers. Keep singing Aunt Maedean...I am listening. I Love You, Sheila
