Obituary for Mahala Elizabeth "Haley" Hess

Mahala E. “Haley” Hess, age 92, of Honaker, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at her home. Born July 2nd, 1929, Mahala was a lifelong resident of Honaker, Virginia. She was one of nine children born to the late Mary Ann (Owens) Hess and John A. Hess. Mahala graduated from Honaker High school and ran a family farm while raising her children. She was devoted to her faith and loved to attend church services and gospel performances in the area. She also enjoyed sewing and making quilts and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Mahala was an animal lover and was especially devoted to her dog, Bella.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Myrtie Griffith, Mabel Belcher, Mary Ellen Breeden and five brothers, Beverly Hess, Bill Hess, John A. Hess, Jr., Luster Hess, Henry Cecil Hess and one grandson, Brentley Meadows. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Survivors include her seven children, Eugene Hess and wife, Kay of Massillon, OH, Lawrence Hess and wife, Geneva of Swords Creek, VA, Glenda Burks of Swords Creek, VA, Archie Hess and wife, Flo of Swords Creek, VA, Connie Taylor of Honaker, VA, Teddy Hess and wife, Jamie of Tazewell, VA, Rhonda Taylor and fiancé, J.C. Maxfield of Honaker, VA; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Linda Green, for the excellent care she provided.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm Thursday, February 3rd at Honaker Funeral Home, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Kenny Taylor and Rev. Guy Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Hess Cemetery on Chestnut Ridge, Virginia.

The family will receive friends at Honaker Funeral Home in Honaker, Virginia at 6:00 pm Wednesday, February 2nd.

Pallbearers will be Dan Laver, Matt Hess, Chad Burks, Ethan Keene, Donavin Hess, Mark Johnson, Nick Meadows, and Darin Taylor.
