Obituary for Margaret Rutherford Compton

Margaret Rutherford Compton, age 85, of Westland, Michigan, formerly of Honaker, Virginia passed away May 4, 2023 at her home. Born September 25, 1937 in Richlands, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Harry Taft and Louise Jamison Rutherford. She was Valedictorian of the Honaker High School Class of 1955 and graduated from Westhampton College, now the University of Richmond, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Minor in Physics. She was employed as a civilian contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense and the Naval Weapons Lab at Dahlgren, VA and she was awarded a Citation from the Commander of the US Naval Weapons Lab for her work on the Polaris Missile System. She moved back to Virginia and taught high school so she could marry her high school sweetheart and love of her life, William Luther Delano Compton. She then worked alongside her husband as the bookkeeper for his business. Her favorite role was being a mother to her children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delano Compton; one son, William Luther Compton and one brother, Harry Rutherford, Jr.
Survivors include two daughters, Louise Compton Popyk and husband, Edward of Dearborn, Michigan and Leslie Compton Kass and husband, Fritz of Pittsford, New York; five grandchildren, William Popyk, Patrick Popyk, Sophie Kass, Margaret Kass and Elise Kass; one brother, William Rutherford and one sister, Midge Jones; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday, May 13, 2023 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Timmy Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens at Bluefield, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be William Popyk, Patrick Popyk, Edward Popyk, Fritz Kass, Bryan Rutherford, Mike Wilson, Dennis Shortt and Garrett Shortt.
The family will receive friends at Honaker Funeral Home from 10 AM-11 AM.
