Mrs. Marilyn L. Matherly Lester, age 68, of the Drill section of Honaker, Virginia passed away Saturday (November 5, 2022) in Richlands, Virginia. Born March 15, 1954 in Richlands, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Charles R. and Myrtle Lee Vandyke Matherly. She was a graduate of Garden High School and Southwest Virginia Community College. She had formerly been employed by Russell County Social Services as a case manager, retiring in 2005. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and cooking, but most of all spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, her twin, Carolyn S. Matherly Hess and Mary Ellen Deel; one brother, Teddy Mullins, maternal grandparents, Flem and Louise Lewis Vandyke, and paternal grandmother, Grace McCloud.
Survivors include her husband of forty-nine years, Rodney Lester; one son, the love of her life, Rodney Scot Lester; brother, Eddie Matherly and wife, Amy of Lebanon; sister, Patricia Jackson and husband, Randy of Vansant; brother-in-law, Tommy Deel of Vansant; special niece, Misty Fletcher; special nephew, Gary “Buttons” Hess; and special friend, Eva Fuller; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Whitt Cemetery at Rowe, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Scot Lester, Foster Bailey, Ronnie Boyd, Gary Hess, Tommy Deel, Rick Lester, and Brad Dotson.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Tuesday.
