Obituary for Ola Sandy Dotson (McGlothlin)
Ola Sandy McGlothlin Ray Dotson, 88 years of age, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 24, 2023, surrounded by her beloved family.
Ola was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a kind and God-fearing lady and friend to all who knew her.
Ola was born December 30, 1934, in Drill, Virginia, to the late Mont Elden and Laura Ellen Helton McGlothlin. She was a lifelong resident of the Fletcher’s Ridge community.
She graduated from Council High School in 1951. Upon graduation, she attended Hiwassee College and Emory & Henry College, pursuing a degree in education. She taught at the Fletcher Ridge School for several years before beginning her family. She worked with the sewing factory in Honaker, Virginia, and later returned to Buchanan County Public Schools as a cook and bus driver for Council Elementary School. In total, Ola worked for BCPS for 30 years.
Ola was an amazing cook. A person left her house well fed. After retirement, one could find her reading the Bible, reading a good book, quilting, working in the garden, and taking care of her family, whom she loved dearly. Ola was a member of Fletcher’s Ridge Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Ola was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Ray, and her second husband, Luther Dotson. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Carl Wayne Dorton, brothers Justin Jones “Doug” McGlothlin and Ritter Mack McGlothlin, and sisters Velvie Marie Shortridge, Elsie Mae Harris, and Mary Irene Hess.
She is survived by her son David Allen and wife Henrietta Ray, her daughter Patricia Ellen “Patty” Dorton, her granddaughter Amanda Ellen Dorton, all of Vansant, Virginia, and grandson Byron Joseph and wife Jennifer Renea Dorton and great-grandson Journey Rivers Dorton all of Birchleaf, Virginia and her sister Ora Mattie Meadows of Rowe, Virginia. Ola is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services for Ola Dotson will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Chester Ball and Rev. Wendell Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the McGlothlin Family Cemetery on Stinson Ridge.
Pallbearers will be Byron Dorton, Steve Sauls, Thomas Austin, Jeffery Hess, Dexter Ray, Gerald Hess, Marie Shortridge, and Mae Pack.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wesley Hess, Derek Ray, Tommy Jackson, Perry McGlothlin, and members of Fletcher’s Ridge Freewill Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Sunday, where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Troy Harris officiating.
