Obituary for Paul Edward "Eddie" Mathis

Mr. Paul Edward “Eddie” Mathis, age 77, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Wednesday (March 18, 2020) at his home. Born January 5, 1943 in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was a son of the late Clifton Mathis and Georgia Renko. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his duty in Germany. A retired coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA. He loved serving the Lord and was a member of Sullivan Branch Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed playing his guitar, singing, doing woodwork, but most of all spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two half-brothers, Lee Renko and Victor Renko.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years, Judy Mathis of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Mathis and wife, Jody, Michael Mathis and wife, Tammy; one daughter, Alicia Owens and husband, Larry; grandchildren, Megan Mathis-Gilbert and husband, Jeff, Hannah Mathis, Justin Mathis and wife, Kayla, Emily Holley, Madison Mathis, and Jalisa Mathis; step-grandson, Ryan Owens and wife, Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Lincoln Mathis, Hollan Mathis, and Eleanor Gilbert; six sisters, Phyllis Osborne, Patricia Healey, Louise Orndorff, Shirley Sublett, Doris Mathis and Linda Noble and her husband, Larry; one brother, Charles Michael Mathis; two half-brothers, Jackie Renko and Marshall Renko; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Jeff Tiller, Rev. Roy Lee Wilson, and Rev. Keith Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Justin Mathis, Jeff Gilbert, Herman Bostic, Charlie Bostic, Roger Rasnake, and Gary Sullivan.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Sullivan Branch Pentecostal Church, Jeff Rasnake, Randall Duty, Denver Sutherland, James Rasnake, Robert Tiller, Gary Ball and David Bostic.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia.
Th family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home on Saturday from 1:00 PM – 2 PM.
