Obituary for Richard Dean VanDyke

Mr. Richard Dean VanDyke, age 60, of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Sunday (October 15, 2023) in Bristol, Tennessee. Born November 22, 1962 in Richlands, Virginia, he was a son of Ella Mae Keen VanDyke of Lebanon, Virginia and the late Kyle VanDyke. A lifelong resident of the Russell County area, he was a 1981 graduate of Lebanon High School. Richard was a loving man of God, who served whole heartedly. He was a professional businessman, a minister, a leader, a councilman, and a devoted father and husband, but of all those roles, he enjoyed being G.P. to his three grandsons most of all.
He was strong in his faith and never waivered. With a witty sense of humor, he conquered everything with cheer and sheer determination. He was extremely proud of his family and a constant source of encouragement for his wife, Sharon and was remarkably proud of his daughter Kelsey and son-in-law, Lindsey, who are now pastoring their own church. He was filled with delight that his three grandsons would be raised in church and taught to love the ways of God.
He also got great joy out of mentoring young ministers and watching them grow. No challenge was ever too big for him to take on. He fostered many youth as a spriritual dad and loved every minute of it. He also loved his town and his role as a councilman, always ready to fight for employees. He cherished his church and loved to sing praise and worship. He brought hope to desperate situations, laughter to those around, and he left his community better because of his peace in it. The Town of Honaker will greatly miss him as we mourn his loss.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his friend, Barbara Vance, who always looked out for him.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a special brother-in-law, James Plaster and nephew, Stuart VanDyke.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of forty-one years, Sharon VanDyke of the home; one daughter, whom he adored, Kelsey Lauren Melton, and her husband, that he considered a son, George Lindsey Melton, Jr. of Lexington, Tennessee; the joys of his life, grandsons, Kellin Melton, Kenan Melton, and Koen Melton of Lexington, Tennessee; brothers, Kenneth VanDyke and wife, Neda of Castlewood, Virginia and Houston VanDyke and wife, Vickie of Swords Creek; his treasured in-laws, Gene and Lucille Reynolds, Scott Reynolds and wife, Jenn, Alicia Plaster, Tammy Lester, and Darrell Lester; eight nephews and nieces also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Gerald Lester and Rev. Brandon Cassell officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gabe Lester, Darrell Lester, Bryan Johnson, Chuck Eaton, Mike Justus, and Bubby Short.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Honaker Town Council, Mayor Jodi Eaton, and C.H. Wallace.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home on Tuesday after 6:00 PM.
