Obituary for Ruby Jean Mullins (Matney)

Ruby Jean Mullins, age 76, of the Clark’s Valley section of Swords Creek, Virginia, passed away Friday (March 25, 2022) at Commonwealth Memory Care in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Born May 10, 1945 in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Matney, Sr. and Elsie Blankenship Matney. A lifelong resident of the southwest Virginia area, she was a devoted member of Swords Creek Block Church. She had retired after 30 years of employment at Ratliff’s Farm and Home Supply in Grundy, Virginia and had loved and enjoyed her job and customers, especially during garden season. A loving mother and grandmother, her greatest joys were spending time with her family, her church family, and especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Mullins, four brothers, James Matney, Johnny Matney, Ernie Matney, and Henry Matney, and one sister, Faye Wolford.
Survivors include her son, Greg Mullins and wife, Michelle; two grandchildren, Jada Mullins and Jayson Mullins; two sisters, Wortha Crawford and Kathleen Walker; two brothers, Harvey Matney, Jr. and Teddy Ray Matney; several nieces, nephews and friends also survive.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Commonwealth Senior Living Memory Care and Helping Hands Hospice.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Steve Perkins officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Swords Creek Block Church, P.O. Box 343, Swords Creek, VA 24649.
Relatives and friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends after 5:00 PM Monday at the Honaker Funeral Home.
