Mr. Steve Shelton, age 73, of Raven, Virginia went to his heavenly home on Friday (January 29, 2021) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born August 17, 1947 in Tazewell County, Virginia, he was a member of Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ. A lifelong resident of the area, he was formerly employed as a coal miner for Island Creek Coal Company and VP #1 and was a member of UMWA. Always showing himself friendly, he never met a stranger. He enjoyed Nascar racing, listening to music, and taking care of his animals, but most of all spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Smith; his father, Alvin Shelton; his brother, Oris Shelton, and one grandson Stevie Gene Nickels.
Those left to cherish his memory, include his loving wife of fifty-five years, Rita Shelton; one daughter, Sherry Nickels and husband, Donnie; two sons, Steve Allen Shelton and Christopher Wayne Shelton; grandchildren, Terri Nickels and Jeff, Jessica Carty Shelton and Brian, Bekki Elisher and Timmy; great-grandchildren, who were very special to him, Shalyn, Khloe, Brayin, Brantly, Arya, and Ava; brothers, Dwight Smith and Marie, Michael Smith and Sherry; best friend, Kelly Lawson; many other special family and friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Frank Lester and Rev. Wayne Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in the Newberry Cemetery on Horton Ridge, Virginia.
Due to COVID restrictions mandated by the governor, a mask is required. For those unable or uncomfortable attending, the funeral service will be livestreamed on our Facebook page as well as our webpage.
Pallbearers will be Bradley Lester, Bobby Lester, Shane Lester, Shawn Lester, Brian Lawson, Jordan Lester, Dwight Smith, Jessee Smith, and Terry Sanders.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6 PM Monday.
