Mr. William Howard Woodward, age 97, of Honaker, Virginia, passed away Saturday (June 13,2020) at his home. Born January 30, 1923, in Matewan, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Joseph and Sarah Dooley Woodward. He was a devoted Christian and a member of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church where he had formerly served as a deacon. William proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in Italy, France and Africa. He had been employed as a boss at Island Creek Coal Company’s Beatrice Mine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Phyllis Moore Woodward; two sons, Tommy Woodward and Rickey Woodward and one infant daughter; one grandson, Lance Woodward and several brothers and sisters. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include three children, Johnny Woodward and wife, Faylene and Paul Woodward and wife, Mona all of Honaker, Virginia and Susan Berfield and husband, Dean of Morristown, Tennessee; ten grandchildren, Gary Woodward, Tony Woodward, Johnny Woodward, Jr., Tara McCoy, Donna Richardson, Leanne Hess, Crystal Sessions, Monica Ritchie, Jacob Lockhart and Shawn Compton; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Taylor and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton, West Virginia 24740.
Pallbearers will be Steve Hess, Shawn Compton, Tim Richardson, Gary Woodward, Tony Woodward, Johnny Woodward, Jr. and Jason McCoy.
The family will receive friends at Honaker Funeral Home after 6 PM Tuesday.
